What is Self-Nourishment?
MYTH: Nourishment comes only from food.
FACT: Nourishment is physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
The arrival of November brings us the opportunity to engage in introspection. As we begin to wind down the year and enter into the holiday season, we’re able to reflect not only on what we’re most grateful for, but also on the areas in our lives that we hope to change or enhance.
Prioritizing our well-being is often one of those areas that tops the list. When we think of nourishment, our minds may instantly go to the foods that we consume for energy and nutrients. Yet, it’s deeper than that. The more we pour into ourselves, the better we’re able to show up in our spaces. Nourishment comes from getting the right amount of rest that our bodies need, allowing us to feel vibrant, refreshed, and capable. We find it in the joyful moments with those we love – deepening the meaningful bonds in our world. Boosting our energy levels through physical activity and mindful movement helps to feel strong, secure, and safe in our bodies.
And while we may not think about it as much, carving out time for pleasure in our lives is also a much-needed form of self-nourishment. What are we denying in our lives? When do we take the time to reconnect with the things that make us feel good? How often do we indulge in intimate and pleasurable moments with our partners – or with just ourselves? Allowing ourselves to bask in pleasurable, sensual moments helps us to harness our sexual and creative energy, using it as a vessel to fuel us and other creative projects.
